University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, Italy

The University of Modena and Reggio Emilia (UNIMORE) was created in 1998, from the merging of the University of Modena (one of the oldest Universities in Europe, founded in 1175) with that of Reggio Emilia, and ranks today amongst the top 8 universities in Italy for its high level of research. Over the years, UNIMORE has established several research centers with Artificial Intelligence focus, such as Artificial Intelligence Research and Innovation Center (AIRI), NVIDIA AI Technology Center @UNIMORE, the AI and Automotive Academies and the National Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence and Intelligent Systems (AIIS). Elisa Ficarra

Elisa Ficarra is Associate Professor at University of Modena e Reggio, in the Department of Engineering ‘Enzo Ferrari’ (DIEF). In particular, her research interests concerns algorithms for biomedical and histological image processing, quantitative immunohistochemistry, clinical genomics and high-throughput sequencing data analysis, with special regards to gene fusion detection, miRNAs/isomiRs analysis, and post-transcriptional regulation process analysis. Ficarra’s research is currently focused on the development of machine learning and deep learning algorithms for genomic data analysis, omics data integration, pattern recognition, feature extraction and interpretability, image segmentation and classification. In DECIDER, her research group focuses on the design and the implementation of biomedical and histological image processing techniques, AI-based methodologies and sequencing data analysis techniques.
